Our Action Plan

Message:
Our message is to inform as many students and teachers in Shanghai American School about the Digital Divide as possible. We think that this needs to be done, so that we can raise awareness about the Digital Divide’s threat in not only China, but also the world. From this, we hope we can gain the support of these students and teachers to help stop the Digital Divide, providing less fortunate people an opportunity to benefit from technology.

Purpose:
As aforementioned, we are doing this to ensure that the less fortunate people of the world should be equal to us in terms of technology. Not only that, but we feel that the ending of the Digital Divide would lead to the ending of many other things, including poverty. This is mainly due to the fact that technology would provide less fortunate people with further education and job opportunities. These less fortunate people include the students of the Li Ming School. The Li Ming school is a migrant school located in the close proximity of SAS which isn’t very well off. We feel that helping the students that go to Li Ming will give them an opportunity to further their education online. This may help them earn a decent job in their adult years.

Short Term Plan:

Our short-term plan is brief and simple. This part of our plan is to have bake sales once or twice a week in school to raise a certain amount of money towards the purchase of electronic items for the Li Ming School. These items include but are not limited to; small TVs, radios, miniature pianos, table lamps and, depending on circumstances, desktop computers or laptops. The faster we earn the money to do this, the better.

Long Term Goal:
Just like what we mentioned before, we are planning to continue our short term plan though out high school or even college. We are hoping to establish an Organization on Digital Divide support more schools around the Shanghai area, and possibly surrounding regions. We hope that this movement would help close the digital divide in China.

Why?

We aim to do this because we feel that this will help close the digital divide in China. We felt that the best place to begin is our local area, which means helping the Li Ming school gain access to technology. Along with helping them gain access to technology, we hope that giving them access would give these less fortunate children to benefit from the many things that can be learnt online.

Other organisations closing the Digital Divide:
We aim to base our organisation around the work of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organisation. They are another organisation working to close the Digital Divide by developing a laptop that would be affordable and of good quality. The laptop includes a computer-to-computer wireless system, which gives a network for people to share files on. It also comes with a charger that doesn’t require a power source. We feel that our plan is similar to OLPC’s, as they too work to giving poor children around the world an opportunity to use technology.
